NYSSMA FESTIVALS update:
NYSSMA has posted the following message on Friday March 20, 2020:
"My Dear Friends and Colleagues,
NYSSMA recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has closed all of our schools and the feasibility of rescheduling almost 150 festivals is no longer possible. Therefore, we have sadly determined we can no longer move forward with Festival Season 2020. All 2020 solo festivals and major ensemble festivals are cancelled. NYSSMA leadership is currently investigating options for All-State auditions for the 2020 Winter Conference.
Sincerely,
David Dr. David M. Brown President, New York State School Music Association"

NYSSMA FESTIVALS ARE SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE:
The following statement was issued by NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association):
"NYSSMA has been carefully monitoring the global COVID-19 outbreak.  We acknowledge the concern surrounding the circumstances of public gathering and are most concerned for the health and welfare of our students, teachers, and communities.   As of today, March 13, 2020 all upcoming NYSSMA festivals are suspended until further notice."

General Information

1. One semester each of Music Appreciation and Art Appreciation are required for graduation. Most students take these courses in the 9th grade, one in the fall, and the other in the spring. Students in the instrumental & choral music sequence (bands, orchestras, choir) for two semesters are exempt from Music Appreciation. Our performing groups are all exceptional, functioning at the highest levels using standard literature.

2. There are 5 bands (Two Concert Bands, Symphonic Band, Beginning Band, & Jazz Band), and 3 string orchestras (Advanced Strings, Intermediate Strings & Symphony Orchestra). There are 4 choruses (Oratorio Choir, Madrigal Choir, Women's Chorus, & Men's Chorus). Auditions for all ensembles are held in June (Camp Stuy Part I). Students who are selected for the performing ensembles are exempt from the Music Appreciation requirement (NOT from Art Appreciation) and from certain “hands-on” senior technology requirements. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

3. Our full-year Beginning Woodwinds/Brass course (which can also be used to replace Music Appreciation) has proven to be very popular. Because we are unable to accommodate all requests for this course, students are selected at random. Information is included in the application packet.

4. Advanced Placement Music Theory, is offered at Stuyvesant as an elective.
